Strategic Enablement
Building a team's capability to run something themselves: working alongside them on real work until they no longer need us on it.
Panoramica
There is a difference between doing work for a team and building a team that can do the work. The first is faster and creates a dependency; the second is slower at first and is what most organisations actually want when they say they need help.
Enablement means working alongside your people on real engagements rather than teaching in a room. They do the work, we are present while they do it, and the involvement reduces deliberately until it is not needed. It is a less profitable model for us and it is the one that leaves something behind.
A chi è rivolto
- Companies bringing a function in house after years of outsourcing
- Teams promoted into responsibilities nobody prepared them for
- Businesses who want capability rather than another supplier
Il nostro approccio a Strategic Enablement
Le attività concrete che comprende un incarico tipo. Il perimetro si concorda prima: nulla di quanto elencato ricompare più avanti come voce a sorpresa.
Capability assessment
What the team can do now, what the role requires, and the honest gap between the two.
Working alongside
Doing real work together rather than teaching abstractly. The learning is in the decisions, not the slides.
Planned reduction
An agreed schedule for our involvement decreasing, so the transition is a plan rather than a drift.
Decision frameworks
The reasoning behind the choices, written down, so the team can handle situations we never covered.
Review and coaching
Regular review of the team's own work with direct feedback, which is where most of the improvement happens.
Documentation
Processes and decisions recorded as we go, so the capability survives the person who learned it leaving.
Dal primo contatto al risultato misurato
Sempre la stessa sequenza, così sapete cosa viene dopo.
Assess
Establish the current capability and agree what independence would look like.
Lead together
Run the first cycle with us leading and the team closely involved throughout.
Swap
The team leads the next cycle with us reviewing rather than directing.
Withdraw
Step back to periodic review, then out entirely, on the schedule agreed at the start.
Risultati, non pile di documenti
Un cumulo di deliverable non è progresso. Questi sono i cambiamenti che il lavoro deve produrre.
Capability that stays
The team can handle the next situation without a new engagement.
Lower ongoing cost
Internal capability is cheaper than a permanent retainer, which is the honest reason this is worth doing.
Faster decisions
A team that owns the work does not wait for an agency's availability.
An agreed ending
A withdrawal schedule agreed up front is what distinguishes enablement from an open-ended retainer.
Domande frequenti su Strategic Enablement
Quello che ci chiedono prima di contattarci. Se la vostra domanda non c'è, fatecela direttamente.
How long does enablement take?
Usually two to three cycles of whatever the work is, so a quarter to a year depending on the discipline. Faster than that and the team has watched rather than practised.
Is it not against your interest to make us independent?
Commercially, in the short term, yes. It also produces clients who return for the next thing and recommend us, which we would rather have than a retainer that continues because nobody else can operate what we built.
What if our team is not ready?
The assessment establishes that first, and sometimes the honest answer is that a hire is needed before enablement makes sense. We would say so rather than running a programme that cannot succeed.
Can you stay involved afterwards?
Often clients keep a light review arrangement, which is a different and much smaller relationship than delivery. That is a reasonable end state and it is not the same as dependency.
