Visual Identity Systems

Turning an identity into a system: components, rules and tokens that hold together across dozens of touchpoints and survive a change of agency.

Überblick

A logo and a palette are not a system. A system is what tells you how the elements combine: spacing relationships, hierarchy rules, how the identity behaves at different sizes, and what happens in the cases the original design never considered.

Organisations of any size discover this the hard way, usually when several teams and agencies are producing material simultaneously and it stops looking related. The system is what makes consistency the default rather than an act of vigilance.

Für wen das gedacht ist

  • Companies with several teams or agencies producing branded material
  • Businesses whose sub-brands and products have drifted apart
  • Organisations whose guidelines document is ignored in practice
Was enthalten ist

Unser Vorgehen bei Visual Identity Systems

Die konkreten Arbeitspakete eines typischen Projekts. Der Umfang steht vorab fest, nichts davon taucht später als Überraschung auf der Rechnung auf.

  • Design tokens

Colour, spacing and type defined as named values that design and code share, so the two cannot drift apart.

  • Component library

Reusable elements with their rules, covering the compositions people actually build rather than idealised examples.

  • Layout and grid system

Spacing and hierarchy rules that make material recognisable before the logo is noticed.

  • Brand architecture

How sub-brands, products and acquisitions relate visually, decided rather than improvised at each launch.

  • Living guidelines

Documentation people can search and copy from, rather than a large PDF that loses to a deadline.

  • Asset management

A findable, versioned library, since most inconsistency comes from someone using a file they had locally.

Ablauf

Vom ersten Gespräch zum gemessenen Ergebnis

Immer dieselbe Reihenfolge, damit Sie wissen, was als Nächstes kommt.

  1. Audit

Collect real material from across the organisation and find where it diverges and why.

  2. Define

Build the tokens, components and rules against the compositions people actually need.

  3. Document

Publish guidelines in a usable form with correct and incorrect examples side by side.

  4. Adopt

Run sessions with the teams and agencies who will use it, and set a review point.

Warum es sich lohnt

Ergebnisse statt Aktenordner

Ein Stapel Dokumente ist kein Fortschritt. Das hier sind die Veränderungen, die die Arbeit bewirken soll.

  • Consistency without policing

A system makes the correct thing the easy thing, which no amount of guideline enforcement achieves.

  • Design and code agree

Shared tokens end the drift between what was designed and what was built.

  • Faster production

Components mean new material is assembly rather than a fresh design decision each time.

  • Survives supplier changes

A documented system can be handed to a new agency without losing coherence.

Fragen

Häufige Fragen zu Visual Identity Systems

Was Kundinnen und Kunden fragen, bevor sie sich melden. Fehlt Ihre Frage, stellen Sie sie uns direkt.

How is this different from brand guidelines?

Guidelines describe rules; a system provides the components and tokens that apply them. A PDF tells a designer what the spacing should be. A system gives them a component that already has it, which is what actually changes the output.

Do we need design tokens if we are not a software company?

If you have a website or an app, yes. Tokens are how the identity stays synchronised between design files and built interfaces. Without them the two diverge within months and nobody notices until a redesign.

How long does building a system take?

Eight to fourteen weeks depending on how many touchpoints and sub-brands are in scope. The audit stage usually takes longer than expected because material is scattered.

Will people actually use it?

Only if it is easier than not using it. That is why we build against the compositions people really make rather than an idealised set, and why adoption sessions are part of the work rather than an optional extra.
